We do so when our partner has the tendency to control everything. It is not a matter of distrust but having a partner doesn't mean that you lose your personality, your privacy, your freedom to do what pleases you.

In case a partner respects -totally- our space, likes and time, than there is no reason for us to hide something.

I feel people hide things from their partners because they either feel what it is they are hiding is bad, or they enjoy having a certain level of control of them.

just to avoid viewing a temper tantrum from someone that should not even have an opinion on the subject in question, usually.

Because they are scared of how they'll react if they tell them the truth. They are afraid that their significant other will get mad and leave them. Personally I think it's better to tell and get it out in the open then to keep it inside. The truth would eventually come out in the end and that way you can avoid the fight about trust. If they get mad they get mad but in the end you'll feel much better and if they love you enough they'll get over it.

It depends on what particular things you are referring to, but in general it seems people seek approval and they don't want their partner to find any reason to be mad or disappointed in them even if its over one small thing.
