Adding composted manure or just plain compost will help any garden. For a flower garden you could use something like Osmocote.

If you have good soil already there's no need to fertilize it before planting. However, if you feel the soil is poor or sandy you can mix in a little bit of potting soil before putting in your flowers.
Any brand will do, but I've had good results with the stuff made by Miracle Gro.

It's good to have some decent soil in the place you're going to plant. I recommend getting bags of soil intended for flower or veggie beds and mixing it in before you plant - they usually have fertilizer mixed in already.

YES!!! Use compost, available from any garden supply store. Make your own for next year. Garbage can, with holes drilled in. Use leaves, kitchen scraps, (veggie scraps- no meat) and some top soil. turn whenever you think of it, add some water whenever. Grass clippings work great also. Next year, you will have a fertilizer second to none. For this year, you can also use plain dead leaves, buried in the ground. They will decompose in time, and feed your plants. I've been doing this for years, and it works great! Good luck and Regards! Bob.

I was told to put Miracle Grow -- Garden soil down after you have selected your spot for the flower bed. I saw it on a commercial and heard it on the local news.
Martha Stewart is a good source. I know, but good old Martha has some good advice on her web site.

It depends on where you are planting, what you are planting, and what you want to spend...
