I'm of Eastern Cherokee heritage and my late husband was Comanche from Texas. I am very proud of my heritage as was my late husband. Our Elders who live not far from us are both of Cherokee heritage as are a lot of the people in southern WV. Several escaped the Trail of Tears as it was coming through and hid out in the caves and hills of southern WV. They kept their secrets hidden to keep from going to jail and so they could own property (Native Americans were not allowed to own property until 1965 in some states). So there are plenty of us still around.
