Well, the old fave was the glasses with water at varying levels to make different sounds when hit with a spoon. Think xylophone.
Nowadays, I think a grouping of blank cds attached to a clothes hanger from varying lengths of twine or thread might be both instrumental and pretty. Think more along the line of cymbals.
Enjoy the project!

How about an autoharp. Use a shoebox with it's lid. Cut a oval shaped whole out of the lid and put different sized rubber bands over it. Strum it.

You could always put a piece of waxed paper over a comb and hum, making a kazoo.

Water glasses with different amounts water in them, struck with a mallet of some kind.

An empty oatmeal carton, open the ends.. with paper tied on each open end you can make a drum, with wax paper and a comb you can make a sound machine humming through it.
A pot with a wooden spoon can make a drum too.

Take a rubber band. Hold one end in your teeth. Hold one end in one hand and pluck the band with the other. You vary pitch with tension, loudness with the strength of the pluck. You can also do this with a flexible strip of metal slid between the teeth. (Be careful with that though.) Have fun.
