Because he was the person that brought blues music to the general white population, so we like to think of him as a hero, a king of rock. Listen to his early music and it is very bluesy. Elvis is one of those artists who, while you may not own a record of theirs, you can probably name quite a few of his songs.
He rocks.

Rock & Roll dominated the 1956 & 57 music
scene.
Bit by bit, this new sound replaced the "doo
wop" of 1955, and then gave way to the novelty
songs of 58' ( only the name Rock & Roll lived on )

But, for two glorious years we were blessed with
crazy tunes that said nothing, and were listened
to by all, pro and con.

We kids loved it.
Our parents thought it sounded like a train wreck.
Anyway, Elvis was at the top of the heap.

Actually he didn't create rock'n roll,Bill Haley and the comets arguably were the first to play it, the only reason why Elvis was so popular was his style,no one had ever moved the way he did,and he was white, most of the people who were doing rock at the time were black. He really wasn't a great artist,he didn't write music or play it,he only sang it but because of his looks and the outrageous way he moved he was dubbed King of rock'n roll.
