Depends what you mean by Tibet. The eastern part was under loose chinese control beginning in the early 18th century. All of what we call Tibet in the modern world was, contra the previous responders, invaded by China in 1950. Mao Zedong ruled China at that time.

That's Mao Zedong by 70s spelling, or Mao Tse Dong by earlier Western spelling.
