Whoever said that possibly meant you to take some time out to enjoy yourself too. Possibly you have been very busy lately and not having much fun or time to yourself, or perhaps this just looks this way to others. Quite understandable really when you have a child with a disability; you do tend to put much more effort into caring for them. Only a parent who has a child with a disability would have much insight into the challenges you would face daily. You are most definitely meeting the challenges, but there are many that would not be able to and would view it as more difficult than you do. You are definitely not doomed! Your daughter is very lucky to have a parent that is totally up there meeting those challenges head on. There is something to be said for parents like you; you definitely have been chosen for the role...who could do it better? I guess you have to be understanding in that there are others who just aren't made the same way as you. There is just too much ignorance about disabilities such as autism; guess we just have to forgive that ignorance. Good luck but I don't think you need it!

Your relative is mixing up two common expressions: "Wake up and smell the coffee" and "Stop along the way and smell the roses". It sounds as though your relative thinks you should "accept reality" and give up trying to help your daughter. The fact that she can't even get the quote right makes me think it's reasonable for you to ignore her. Autistic children CAN be helped, especially if they can get into a good program with a good teacher. Understanding parents are essential too. They understand their child's particular quirks the best.
