In George Orwell's book 1984, the main character is captured and brainwashed by the government. They torture him until he admits that 2 plus 2 does not equal 4 but whatever they want it to equal (also 5).
If you were tourtured like this would you give in and say 2 + 2 is something else or keep your pride and die knowing you were right all along?

I read the book. You didn't put in how they tortured him, now did you?
Winston Smith (the main character) has this mega fear of rats. So they put a basket/cage thing over his head and lock it in place. Then they were going to put rats in there, thus giving the rats access to his face. You can figure out what happens then. But he gave in as soon as they brought a rat near him.
And my answer: hell yes, I'd say that 2 + 2 = cheesecake as long as they don't do that to me.

Man , I'm not principaled about arithmetic! one little splinter under the fingernail and they can have that equal to any letter or number they want. I might have a different reaction about free speech or freedom of association or some other guaranteed right.

I would just give in and keep my life and my sanity. I look at it as suicide to die just to keep my pride. I don't see a good enough reason to die in that situation.

After 21 years at the Police Department, bring it on! They've tried to brainwash us with all kinds of stupid stuff. I think I am just too stupid to catch on to the whole brainwashing thing because I don't have the required equipment.. i.e. a brain!
