Where are they and what purpose do they serve (mainly)?

I agree with the above answer. There are 3 people in space, on the International Space Station. There are several thousand satellites in orbit. Many are no longer operational. Of the ones still operating, there are many different types. Some are for communication, some are for weather or other Earth science, some are other kinds of science satellites, like the Hubble Space Telescope and some are military spy satellites. There is also the GPS navigation satellites, which are military satellites that also provide navigation signals for civilian use.

There are thousands of satelites currently in orbit around the Earth... therefore it would be impossible to tell you what purpose they all serve... even in a generalized sense... as for people I believe there are currently 3 on board the International Space Station
