There are a few possibilities so I;ll list several things you can check and try.

1. He could be cold. Be sure his tank is at least 74F and 80F is even better.

2. If there are other fish in the tank they may be bullying him. Watch them from across the room for a while and see if any bother him.

3. The water quality could be off, especially if it's been a while since you did a water change. If this is the case, change about 25% of the water now and another 25% in abut 24 hours or so.

4. If he appears to be having problems swimming down from the surface he could have a problem with constipation, try not feeding him for a day and then give him a little vegetable with fiber in it. Hulled green peas or softened spinach are both good things to try.

5. If none of that works could he be getting old? Bettas normally live about 4-5 years, sometimes more but that's typical.

Check those out and if none work feel free to drop me an email and we can go from there.

I myself have three male betta fish and I believe that your betta's water is either too cold, he's over fed or you haven't treated the tap water with a water conditioner. If you put your betta in tap water without making it safe, your betta will die. I hope you didn't put him in with other bettas....that will cause too much stress on your bettas....they are meant to be alone.

maybe he's in the process of becoming dead.

i read in a reader's digest once that this writer gave his fish smashed peas when he found the fish floating at the top of the tank. within hours, the fish was swimming around again. myabe you could try that, just a thought.

good luck.

He's probably going to die. If he's just floating at the top on his side or upside down there may be a problem with his swim bladder.

He is very sick and I don't think that there is anything that you cn do about it. It is probably going to die soon, so be forwarned. And also - how do you know he is not dead already?
