Try the free ancestry.com message boards to get a start. Go to the board for your last name (surname) and post a question.

There is a lot of free information in the usgenweb pages.

Try familysearch.org - this is a Church of Latter Day Saints site that gives you access to the millions of records that have been submitted there over many many years. Your family does not have to have any Mormon ties to be in their database.

If your family has been in the same place for ever, that would be called the local records office.

The assorted ancestry search sites are next to useless. They miss entire branches of family trees, and add relatives that are not even related.

'fraid you'll have to risk paper cuts and sinuses full of dust.
