Some moms can feel their baby move as early as 13-16 weeks. These first fetal movements are called quickening and are often described as flutters. It may be difficult to determine whether this feeling is gas or your baby’s movements, but soon you will begin to notice a pattern. First-time moms may not feel these movements as early as second-time moms. Some moms, especially those in their first pregnancy, may not feel movement until 18-20 weeks. Remember that each woman and each pregnancy is different, so you may not feel movement as early as another woman. There is a broad range of when the first detection of movement can be felt, ranging from 13-25 weeks.

Quickening is the first time a pregnant mother feels the baby inside her move. It generally happens between 18 and 24 weeks for first-time mothers, a few weeks earlier for women who have had at least two babies. Since you asked this question, I'm assuming this is your first pregnancy. It's possible that what you're experiencing is quickening, but this early in the pregnancy, it's more likely to be gas (sorry). I've never been pregnant, but my understanding is that quickening is pretty unmistakable for anything else. If you're not sure, then what you're experiencing probably isn't it.

Quickening is defined as the first time you feel your baby move. This is a long anticipated event in every pregnancy.
If you are expecting your first baby you can expect to feel your baby for the first time between 18 and 24 weeks gestation. If this is not your first baby you can expect to feel your baby a bit sooner than you felt your first. This is usually said to happen because you know what you're feeling for and your uterus is more stretched out than it was the first time around.
Even when you've been there before many women describe these first movements as differently as night and day:

Quickening is the term used to describe the early feelings of fetal movement. Generally it will feel like you have butterflies in your stomache, a slight fluttering, or buzzing. Generally with a first pregnancy this occurs anywhere from 16 weeks to 22 weeks for the first time!

Quickening is an old fashioned term for feeling life....... when you feel the first movements. I believe the term "the quick and the dead" came from the bible, in the apostle's creed, meaning the alive and the dead.

I thought quickening was when the baby in the womb began to move.

I know they say you can't feel it before about 15 weeks, but I swear sometimes I feel little flutters. It's awesome! Congrats!

Congrats! . You may be feeling the baby moving now.Lie down, try back, side etc.,be still, close eyes, no noise. Feel a flutter like the wings of a butterfly? baby is (swimming) in amniotic fluid and you may get the "waves'" also. A beautiful time of your life (I hope). God Bless. FC

Quickening is the first movements that you feel from your baby, so that's what you're feeling.
