supposedly for your health. Truth is they want you miserable and tired and dirty (which is miserable).
They should have to run a mile everytime they tell a kid to, and they just wanna stand around and gossip. Tell your mom to get you a note from the Dr saying you shouldn't run without parental supervision or something. Your parents should be able to relate, its very old school torture.

If it makes you feel better, I ran 7-10 miles a day in the Army. One mile isn't really all that bad... And my P.E. teachers were too fat to run it. Besides, they had to stick around and make sure we weren't running off into the woods to smoke some weed or play doctor...

To get exercise and stay healthy, you also have to run the mile for the physical fitness test.

It's all a part of the "presidential fitness test" that I think JFK created? (I could be wrong on the president, but I know it was around that time. It was to ensure that children got adequate exercise, but if you ask me I think P.E. is a load of crock. Nobody at my school cared, nobody actually fully "participated". Everyone thought it was a joke so I don't think it actually helps...I don't see why you have to take it to graduate either. I think the whole thing is dumb.

Running sucks.. Unless It is necessary .. and even then it is not appealing to me.

It's because our Founding Fathers chose the English system over the Metric system! Otherwise, we'd have to run 2 Km, which would be farther!
Also, it's so we can escape faster when we have total gun control and only the criminals and mentally-disturbed can get guns! ;)
