Yes, smoking puts nothing into your body but harmful and cancer causing poisons... therefore it gets transferred to the baby.

You should be okay for now, but DO try to quit before the second trimester. I was smoking about a pack a day before I got pregnant, and I kept smoking up until I took the test (I was about 8 weeks by then), but at that point the cigarette smoke was making me SO nauseaus that I quit easily. Put em down and didn't pick em up again. My teacher in beauty school was pregnant and a smoker. Her doctor told her if she REALLY can't quit, not to have more than one a day. But quit soon. I saw a woman in the DMV who had to be more than 8 months pregnant, she was ENORMOUS. In our one-hour wait at the office, I saw her go outside to smoke TWICE. It was disgusting. I wanted to slap her straight.

I wouldn't think the risk would be worth it. If you can go all day with only one half to one, why no quit altogether? I'm not being judgemental, I did this myself last June when I found out I was pregnant with my son. The day I got the positive test I quit. Not to say it's been easy...he's now 9 weeks old and I haven't gone back to smoking, though I DO have cravings still. I just figure if I was able to go this long, why go back? Good luck, and congrats on the baby-to-be!

it probably won't harm the baby too much. It is good that you are quitting and if this is the only way you can do it, do whatever works. It does a lot more damage if you are back to smoking a lot AFTER the baby is here. There is more risk of asthma and other breathing problems if you smoke around your newborn than there is when he/she is in your womb. But that's not an excuse to smoke.
Good luck to you.

Yes, it can harm your baby, many of the organs are beginning to form. When you smoke, your oxygen levels are not normal. You have one a day-- just kick it. I quit completely in Feb. I feel so much better. I can smell things and taste things, and I know the little life inside me is going to be healthier. I also quit with my first child. --Get this mental pic in your head-- A fetus smoking. Disturbing, but that is how I stopped. It is just eerie. And remember, you are a mother, and you are in charge of what is going inside of your child, do you really think nicotine is healthy?

hi angel. iam also about 5 weeks pregnant, i know it but havent actually got the confirmation that i am via a blood test only a home test. i'am hoping that if i put it off longer i will have more time to give up smoking, but that is really a selfish way of thinking it.
i know its hard, im a heavy smoker i smoke at least 20 per day which is terrible for a 19yr old woman like myself. now im pregnant i seem to be smoking more & i dont know if its the stress. i know using patches can also be very harmful so i think we should just give up cold turkey as soon as possible.
i would really like to keep in contact with you as we are so close in pregnancy & we could share ideas and information.
please email me.

probably not yet as the embryo would still be using the yolk sac for nourishment. but in a few weeks that will change and it will get all its nurishment directly from you via the umbilical cord.
Plz stop smoking.. dont just cut back but QUIT! T ere all kinds of DOCUMENTED medical issues the fetus is prone to from a smoking mother. Low birth weight, premature delivery, Asthma etc etc.
1 a day.. just quit. Your baby will thank you.
PS, the fetus' lungs are not inflated with oxyben untill after the birth, they are filled with amniotic fluid and not fully develooped untill late in the 3rd trimester. All the O2 your baby gets is through your blood exchange, your lungs oxygenate your blood, then it travels through your body and the fetus supplying oxygen rich blood to all your organs. Cigerette smoking makes it harder for the lungs to oxyginate your blood. the comment about watching the baby stop breathing with each puff of a cig is an urban legand.....Bologna!
But you should still stop smoking

Yes it is bad. Should you torture yourself over potential harm done thus far? no.
I quit at 6 six weeks, when I found out I was preggo. The way I knew to take the test - my cigs suddenly tasted disgusting! Quit now - you won't even miss them once the hormones really kick in.
And if you have trouble, think of it this way: would you let your 2 year-old smoke? So why in the world is it OK when she is this young?
Good luck and congrats.
