Use a online port scanner to check for example TCP incoming port 137, 445, etc.
There are also some scanners which check all 65535 ports.
If it says that these are open, then you are doomed. :-(

If you are using XP or Vista the Windows firewall is as good as any. Unwanted inward protection s all you need, used with good virus protection and popup blockers prevents anything else. All my clients only use this, some have Norton, but have had to disable Norton firewall due to various problems, The Windows firewall works and is easily configured.

Start/Control Panel/Security Center will tell you if the Windows firewall is running. It is what is known as 'stateful packet filtering' firewall; means that it will only respond to incoming traffic that is in response to outgoing traffic. To be safe, go to zonelabs.com and download zonealarm and install it as well; no matter what other "experts" tell you, it does play nice with Windows Firewall. (At least in XP-I've been running it on my PC, and the dozen or so friends and family I support in my personal rather than professional capacity, for at least the last three years).

Go to start and open your control panel. There you will see "Security Center", open and see if your firewall is turned on or off. Microsoft firewall is no good as it only protect you from incoming rogue packets. A true firewall need to protect you from incoming rogue packets and protect your data from leaving your pc without your permission.

Get yourself a good free firewall. I use Zone Alarm Free for home use. http://www.zonealarm.com Download their free home version. You get auto update, and all new versions free. Excellent free firewall.

If you do download zone alarm, turn off the microsoft firewall.
