Jane applies for a county job in May 2006. Jane is placed on employment list to be called if there is an opening. Jane accepts another full time position July 2006. Jane arrives home May 2007 Monday to message on machine. Person calling about county job. Phone number cut off. Tuesday night another message same person with complete phone number. Jane calls Wednesday lunch break to schedule interview. No scheduling, set time slots only and only two both Friday. Jane informs can't attend Friday, large project at current job and can't get time off until following week. Person (HR?)says she will see if "they" will open any slots the following week. Jane gives both cell number and email (which person says she didn't have though Jane puts both on every application). Person says will call or email back with answer Wednesday or Thursday. It is now end of day Thursday and neither call nor email arrived. They aren't really interested in Jane are they? Jane has clearly stated interest.

I want to clarify something. Regarding Jane's "inflexibility", I'll say it again. Jane has a big project at work and the boss absolutely will not give her the time off and would require proof of any sudden illness. As in doctor's note. Takes weeks to get doctors appointment so there goes that. Jane is many things but she is not stupid enough to get fired just to go to an initial interview with no guarantee of employment. Jane has been thinking that if they are looking for someone stupid they shouldn't be looking at her anyways. She is also thinking that it is they who are being inflexible and what would happen in the future if she accepted a position and then had a flat tire? Sick child? Doctor's appointment?

No it really doesn't seem as though they are interested. Even though you have to be at your job to put food on the table, that employer is probably thinking that they should be Jane's first priority, which you can't blame them. There probably were losts of other people willing to go that Friday. They have probably found someone already.

I'm sorry, but maybe this just wasn't meant to be for Jane.

If you were truly interested in the county job, you would have found a way to work around your schedule. By not agreeing to the times they gave you, that showed your inflexibility and basically eliminated you from the running.

Sorry Jane...but no...even after your explanation, you are still seen as being inflexible. Let's put it this way...likely this county job would make you a state employee. Great benefits there, I know - I finally got in last year. Here's the deal...they've got a lot of other applicants besides yourself who are surely interested in the job, some just as or even more qualified than your self. If you can't bend to meet them, they won't bend for you either.

Janes inflexiblity means they can pick and choose who they hire, so there is not match between employer and prospective employee, thus they will move on to the next interested candidate. If Jane was truly intersted she would have found a way to make it to the interview.

I agree. I don't think that they are interested in Jane.
