The only reason why money cannot buy us happiness is, because nothing in life has any meaning, only the meaning we we give it. Which means that what makes one person happy dose not necessarily affect another person the same way. Your question should have been would money make me unhappy? Or would I be happier without money? One thing that I am sure of, money cannot stop us from being unhappy! Just ask Britney Spare or Robbie Williams.
We humans survive a individuals, family and group. Money could buy you a better survival rate. You could buy what you want when we want it. The best education, marry the right breeding stock and join groups like the masons and the likes.

Temp happiness, saying money will not buy you happiness is totally wrong to a certain degree as lets face it when you buy something you have always wanted ie a car, then you are happy arnt you?
Money cant buy you love, but it buys you gold diggers.

a whole lot of material things that you cant bring with you if you die so whats the point in acquiring a pile of worthless goods when you could start a collection of good deeds,because a legacy of goodness can be left behind and that my friends is a life well lived
