Sure, but let's go all the way. Give upstate New York it's freedom too. Split the state of New York into three, and let Manhattan go its own way.

Actually when people were first moving to Long Island, they were thinking of making it its own state, but they soon realized they needed the state of New York to survive. although Long Island is more independent now, I don't see what good making Long Island its own state would be, if anything it would probably make things worse. The already through the roof taxes would be even higher. one question i ask is since everyone thinks of New York as Manhattan, what should we do with the rest of Up State New York....make a separate state too... it wouldn't make any sense.

You do know that the rest of NY State does not like to be linked with either Manhattan or Long Island. Personally in my opinion you can set long island free as far as I'm concerned. I'll take upstate and Manhattan any day.

Becuase the State of New York would never allow it to happen. There is too great a tax base. In addition, there is not the political clout on Long Island to support statehood.

WOW!! NY is an entire state and it has a huge "upstate" part, this part includes Albany (the capital), Buffalo, Syracuse, Rotchester, Utica, Rome, Schenectady and many others some 8 million people. You are whining about people not thinking of that crappy island you have. Give me a break!! Shouldn't you be getting back to Isreal anyways?

That wouldn't be a smart move, LI benefits from the NY tax base, that would be lost if it its own state. Kennedy Airport takes up some prime real estate without paying property tax, and a lot of LI economy is only summer income. Also everyone who lives in LI and works in NYC would have to pay income tax to two states. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

There is already a state with Island in the name let's leave it that way.
NO! Please there is enough confusion already. It's amazing how many people think one if from New York when one tells them Rhode Island. Make it a different state and it's just going to confuse people even more.

Bay Shore born here. Hawaii raised. Our 50th State is often confused to be separate from the United States. I don't know why LI needs to be separate except for some local political formats or just "cuz. Not a bad idea but? We have bigger fish to fry to work together not separate further.

LI was part of Massachusetts, at least the east end, in the begin with you would like to Kennedy and Kerry as a senators?
Damn right, LI should be free of Hillary and Schumer.
You got my vote.
