For the most part, criminals believe their actions are justified. They think it's okay for them to commit a crime to begin with, so why should they go to jail for it?
For the most part, these people fall into the category of psychopath (statistically, 1 in 4 humans qualify for this label). That doesn't necessarily mean that they're axe murderers...just that they have no empathy for others, and are only concerned about themselves. If that's the case, they're not likely to just submit to being in prison.
Anyone who is level-headed enough to just accept their sentence is probably level-headed enough to not commit the crime in the first place.

Good question but without simple answers. A lot of the posters are on the right track blaming the person who committed the crime. When you break the law or do anything else you should do it with the full understanding that you may have to suffer consequences for your actions.
The one who blamed the sorry condition of our penal system is a classic example. He knows the prisons are terrible, if he committed a crime he would be in fact accepting the possibility that he would end up there. Just for the record, prison isn't supposed to be fun or all warm and happy. It's a frippin' punishment! Nobody in their right mind should expect it to be even as easy as it is. I like the idea of work gangs myself. Let the people who have harmed others earn some of their upkeep. Their actions got them there, it was strictly their choices that got them there

Your question is a bit odd.
If i were 'found guilty' of a crime, i`d protest - cause i`m innocent.
It`s as simple as that.
But, if you mean, when you have done a crime, why don`t you want to do the time ..
then it is because people in general do not wish to be responsible for their own choices and actions.
" I had a bad childhood" "he started it" "the devil made me do it" and all kinds of lame excuses designed to shift blame to someone or something other than the one responsible.

That is all good and well, unless you really didn't do the deed. If you screwed up, committed a crime and got caught, then you deserve what you get. But if you are truely innocent, then taking the punishment is WRONG!. If this is the case, then appeal.

Either they think they can get acquitted by denying it, or they're so deluded they don't even think they've done anything wrong. There are many sociopaths who sincerely believe they're entitled to whatever they can get their hands on and they see nothing wrong with it. It doesn't matter who they hurt as long as it benefits them. Worse yet, there are many people who are so afraid of making waves they refuse to even turn in these criminals or testify against them.

Because our prison system is run by gangs from the inside and sadistic guards on the outside.
Maybe, if I was found guilty in a country with an enlightened correctional system instead of a punitive insane asylum run by the inmates I'd feel differently.

Because of our crap culture. Everyone is brought up thinking they are the perfect individual snowflake and can do no wrong. If they are in trouble it must be someone else's fault. I agree. Man up!

And because someone is "found guilty" doesn't mean they are!
