1. The vast majority of known asteroids orbit the sun near the plane of the ecliptic, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
2. Not all asteroids orbit in the plane of the ecliptic. Some of these rogue asteroids are harder to detect than normal asteroids, and pose a greater danger to impacting the earth.
3. Japanese space probe Hayabusa recently visited asteroid Itokawa. It orbited the asteroid, and actually took samples of the surface. Hayabusa is on its way back to earth with the samples.
4. A couple of asteroids (i.e. Ceres) are so large, they could be classified as minor planets, by the definition Pluto got recently (when it got demoted).
