A parable is a brief, succinct story, in prose or verse, that illustrates a moral or religious lesson. It differs from a fable in excluding animals, plants, inanimate objects, and forces of nature as actors that assume speech and other powers of mankind.
Examples of parable are Ignacy Krasicki's "The Blind Man and the Lame," "The King and the Scribes" and "The Drunkard."
Besides the familiar parables of Jesus in the New Testament, such as those of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, two parables in the Old Testament are the parable of the ewe-lamb told by Nathan in 2 Samuel 12:1-9, and that of the woman of Tekoah in 2 Samuel 14:1-13

A parable is a story used to teach a lesson. In the Christian Bible, Jesus was famous for using parables to cajole people into improving their behavior.
Fables are also parables, as are many folk tales. Take for example "The Boy who Cried Wolf." They tend to be simple stories so everyone can see the cause and consequence of a particular behavior. The lesson can be positive or negative.
In this case, the boy cries out that there is a wolf, so the men of the village come rushing to save him and to kill the wolf. There is no wolf, and the men go back to work. The boy cries out that there is a wolf a second time. Again the men come running. There is no wolf and the men return to work. Finally, the boy is threatened by a real wolf. He cries out for help, but the men of the village ignor him, as the boy has proven himself to be a liar. The wolf eats the boy. The lesson of course, is that being honest and truthful will serve one well in the community.

using my own words and not wikipedia a parable is a short story that teaches a moral lesson. Jesus used parables though I cant rattle on off the top of my head. but a good example would be the story about the grasshopper and the ants. The quick version: the grasshopper was carefree, didnt work, he just played and frolicked in those summer months. He never looked to the future. one day he came upon some ants who were busy gathering food. They were quite busy and had no time for the grasshopper's foolishness. The grasshopper invited the ants to run and jump and sing along with him. The ants replied "we are storing food for the winter and you should do the same" of course the grasshopper ignored this. He didnt give a thought about the upcoming winter. so he left the ants to do their foolish work. Summer passed and fall had arrived. THe grasshopper began to notice that food was scarce but still he would not do anything about the future. Of course the ants continued their foraging for food to store. Winter came at last, the trees were bare. Snow covered every inch of the forrest. Not a single green leaf , stalk or blade of grass was to be seen. THe grasshopper started to realize too late that he had beeen a fool for not taking the ants advice. He was soon oon the verge of starvation and would have died had the ants not taken him in for the winter. The grasshopper vowed he would look to the future and would help bring in the food the following summer.
there are lots of variations to this tale but thats the basic story.
oh I think the ants and the grasshopper went for pizza.

I teach my students that a Parable is an earthly story with a Heavenly meaning. Jesus used parables to teach others around him so that they could better understand what he was teaching.
