I'm a sucker for the classics:
Slaughter House 5: Curt Vonegut
Catch 22: Jseph Heller
1984: George Orwell
Apparently I like numbers too.

Okay, very random selection. These are 3 of my favorite books EVER (in no paticular order).
1. The Hiding Place written by John & Elizabeth Sherrill with Corrie ten Boom...a true story about Corrie ten Boom and her family living in Haarlem, Holland during WWII. My high school students are HOOKED!! It's suspenseful and, this sounds weird, inspiring.
2. Harry Potter #5: The Order of the Phoenix:I know this is cliche right now to suggest a Harry Potter book, but I just recently became interested in the books & movies, so I am not just following things that are popular. Book 5 is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. It is a page turner from page 1...and the climax lasts forever and continues to build!! I stayed up one night until 3 in the morning (I had to be at work at 8am the next day!!) just because I couldn't put it down!
3. Candle in the Darkness by Lynn Austin. A fictional story based on historical facts. This book follows the story of a wealthy young girl living in the deep South during the Civil War and what she sacrificed to help slaves to freedom. By the way, anything by Lynn Austin is GREAT!!
Hope you like them!!

Virgin Suicides / Jeffrey Eugenides
Everything is Illumintated / Jonathan Safran Foer
A Long Way Down / Nick Hornby
(alternatively About A Boy / Nick Hornby)
I wanted to keep to fairly contamporary books and not too pretentious ones. All these three are really good, but it's more difficult as I have no idea what you're into of course. If you enjoy reading more political texts, I could warmly recommend My Garden / Jamaica Kincaid. It's warm, personal, and political at the same time. I love her books but I know not everyone does.

Good Classics would be----
Gone with the Wind. is the most amazing book you will ever read. Even few days after I read it, I couldn't shake it off of me.
There's also Of Mice and Man and The Great Gatsby...those three books are my favorite.
Some books nowadays would be..
Angles and Demons by Dan Brown...even better than the davinci code!
good luck! =]

Angels and Demons by Dan Brown the same guy that wrote Davinci Code. It is even better than Davinci code.
The Left Behind Series (these are awsome books even if you are not religious, I loved them and I didn't think I would)
And of course any Harry Potter book no matter what your age.
