I need to have 32 bars of music to sing, and I'm an alto. I feel comfortable singing higher for them (about up to a C, so long as it goes there, then gets back down to my normal range, instead of just being stuck there). I realize that in order to sing the music in the show, I need to be a bit higher, but for the audition, I just want to sound good, and singing by myself for the audition, I'm going to be extremely nervous, which will make it harder for me to sing too high... I was thinking maybe a show tune, but I just want to look professional and get my point across that I want a part and can sing it, so I'm not really sure... Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I think, if you want to do an excerpt from a Footloose song, the perfect one for an alto would be:

'Learning to be Silent' - the part of 'Vi Moore'

It's the perfect song to show that you can sing, and it shows range without taking you out of a comfort zone. Plus, even though there isn't a lot of movement in the song, it's also a great tune to show your acting ability. It's a song that you can get the point across by standing still, which is great because it shows that you can act without adding on flashy dance moves or large gestures.

Good luck with your audition, and I hope you get a good part!

I wouldn't sing something from the show because a lot of people are going to be doing that and you want to stand out. Since you're so nervous, sing something you're comfortable with in the same style as the show (ex: you don't want to sing a song from La Boheme b/c it's not the same type of music that Footloose is. I sung "All that Jazz" for an audition of 1776 once- big mistake!). Honestly though, they just want to see if you have a good voice. I've been to auditions where people have sung Amazing Grace or the ABC's.

You never sing from the show you're auditioning for unless specifically asked to! I suggest looking at what the following characters sing in their respective shows:

Sally in Cabaret, Carrie in Carousel, Robin in Godspell, Flaemmchen in Grand Hotel, Marty in Grease, June or Mazeppa in Gypsy, Jeannie in Hair, Bet in Oliver, Sarah in Ragtime, Jenny Anderson in Shenandoah, Luce in The Boys from Syracuse, Anita in West Side Story, Lucy in Charlie Brown...

Those are all the altos I can think of right now! If you can transpose music, pick whatever you like but in any case go for a character you fit well. Break a leg!

Here's a website with the songs from the musical, - all short versions of the songs. (Scroll down to the bottom of the screen). http://www.amazon.com/Footloose-Musical-1998-Original-Broadway/dp/B00000I8SN

I'd try "Holding out for a hero" from the musical. Gets a chance to showcase what you can do (especially if you have a full-deep voice) and is not too high of a range.

Good luck at the audition!

the answer before me is a pretty good answer...A lot of times you dont want to sing something from the actual show though, because a lot of peopel are going to be doing that....my suggestion is sing something that has a bit of the footloose style to it but is something other than the actual show so the casting directors arent bored out of their skulls hearing the same songs over and over....A good play to look into is the last five years. something like "climbing uphill" or "goodbye until tomorrow" they will showcase your voice and especially your acting. good luck
