How did they determine who was next on the Throne?
Can anyone help me out on this subject?

Jerry T has supplied the best information first, and you should award him full points. I think the word you seek is primogeniture: Inheritance of the first-born. However, the period 800-1300 is iffy.

The name of what? Actually for all those years, Scotland was under the King/Queen of Englands rule.
