the change in religion is the product of the dalit's quest for a better social position in society.
for one, they are out of the Hindu stratification system and its demeaning systems (at least theoretically speaking).
on the other hand nothing much changes because they still get all those privileges of reservation even after they've opted out of the Hindu stratification system.

It is a change in faith from Hinduism to Budhism that matters. Whereas the people are discriminated in the name of caste in Hinduism there is no room for such discrimination.Having crossed this barrier the person adapted to the new faith can look forward to attain his goals.
