It depends on what you're planning to do. If you're just going to stay on or near the Strip and just casino hop, it's really not worth it. Traffic on the Strip can be a nightmare - especially on a weekend night! (It's taken me 40 minutes to get from one end of the Strip to the other - which is like 3 miles.) There's shuttles and cabs if you're going to one of the off-strip places like The Palms, Rio, or Hard Rock. There are tours for Hoover Dam and probably Red Rock too.
If you're going to explore the entire city, consider renting the car. I have friends spread out from Henderson to the UNLV area, so since it would cost me more to cab it to them, I rent the car.
The weather is going to be HOT. Figure at least 100 degrees during the day and 85 to 90 at night. Do NOT buy chocolate and leave it in the car. It will become soup. I learned that the hard way. (I thought that it would be okay in the airconditioned car. Ooops.) It's not the humid hot like the East Coast, but it's like the blast you get when you open the oven door.

I think renting a car would be a good idea. If your time is worth anything, I'd definitely avoid the buses (and walking those distances in that weather is nearly insane) and a round trip cab from the El Cortez to the Strip will cost you as much (or more) than a day's rental. If you aren't there at a particularly busy time, you can often find very cheap car rentals. Keep in mind that you don't have to rent your car at the airport. Could take a shuttle to your hotel for a few bucks and pick up the car somewhere downtown. You can avoid the extra fee they charge for renting at the airport. You might also be able to get by with renting the car for just a day or two and planning your trips on those days.

I agree with everyone here, but I still prefer to rent a car so I am not at the mercy of a cab or public transportation. The only downfall about renting a car are the darn fees associated with rental cars in Las Vegas. I am going to Vegas soon for six days and the fees on the rental car are almost $70.00! If you don't think you will be exploring Nevada, save your money!

I guess I agree with most people ... if you plan to go to Red Rock Canyon or Hoover Dam you might want to rent a car. We go to Las Vegas at least twice a year and usually rent a car. However, stay off the strip due to traffic problems. Public transportation is available to get you just about anywhere you want to go. If this is your first trip, you might want to walk the strip to see all the sites. If you get hot you can stop inside a casino to cool off.
Have fun!

TRAFFIC is terrible. especially if you don't know the roads.
You don't really need a CAR unless you plan to go off the strip. And its very easy to not leave the strip at all.
July is hot hot hot season. the average TEMPERATURE for that time is 104.. thats the temp not the heat index, the hi can get up around 115 or so 8 feet off the pavement.

If you are planning to stay downtown, you won't need a car. The entire area is geared for pedestrians. The strip or going sightseeing is a different story, you will need a car.
I went last year with plans to visit outside the city. The traffic from the airport to downtown was fast and if you don't know where you are going, can be pretty scary.

It all depends on what you are going to do, of course. But, the main thing I wanted to say is renting a car in Las Vegas is very, very cheap compared to other states.

If you plan on staying on the strip, a car won't be necessary. The traffic on the strip is a nightmare anyway. There are plenty of Taxi's. If you want to go sightseeing, your hotel can arrange a bus tour. So overall, I'd say don't get one! You'll have a wonderful time! Most of my family is out there and I love it!

If you're just going to be on the strip, walk everywhere. Keep in mind, the strip is a few miles long so it will take an hour to walk in one stretch. I went downtown once. The city bus runs every fifteen minutes between downtown and the strip so I just took that.
