This Folklore is old. I do not know whether it is Scottish, English, Irish. I need to know who wrote the Folklore and where I can access it. I know putting money on the deceased love you allows them to pay "a man" to crossover to heaven.

Very important to me; need this information.

Thanks

In Greek mythology, Charon (in Greek, Χάρων — the bright[1]) was the ferryman of Hades. (Etruscan equivalent: Charun) (Modern Greek Folklore: angel of death: Charos or Charontas) He took the newly dead from one side of the river Acheron to the other if they had an obolus (coin) to pay for the ride. Corpses in some regions in ancient Greece were buried with a coin underneath their tongue to pay the fare. Some authors claim the price to be 2 coins, placed over each eye of the deceased. Those who could not had to wander the banks of the Acheron for one hundred years.

The story goes that you would put coins on the eyes of the deceased to pay "the ferryman", who would then ferry you over the river Styx to the afterlife, It's very very old, I couldn't tell you where the idea of the ferry man came from. There was also a practical purpose to putting coins on the eyes though, at the time it was to weight the eyelids down, so once you closed them, they would stay closed, and not come open from rigor mortis, while you were waiting for people to come and prepare the body for burial. Modern day undertakers have some sort of special plastic inserts for the eyes nowadays....

it was either roman mythology or greek where if you didn't put 2 copper coins on your loved ones body (some put them in the mouth or on the eyes) then the grim reaper (of the boat man to the underworld) wouldn't take them to the after life.
