let x = number of miles driven over 119 miles

59 + 0.02*119 + 0.12*x = 75.42
59 + 2.38 + 0.12*x = 75.42
61.38 + 0.12*x = 75.42
0.12*x = 14.04
x = 117

She can drive 117 miles more than 119 = 236 total miles.

First, Jessica must pay the rental fee. So out of the $75.42, $59.00 will go to the rental, leaving $16.42 for gas.

119 miles at $0.02 per mile is $2.38, so she has enough to drive the 119 miles, leaving $14.04. At $0.12 per mile, $14.04 will take her another 117 miles for a total of 236 miles

75.42 - 59 = 16.42 (amount left over for mileage)
119 * .02 = 2.38 (cost of the first 119 miles)
16.42 - 2.38 = 14.02 (amount left over after 119 miles)
14.04 / .12 = 117 (amount she can drive at $0.12 per mile)

She can drive 119 + 117 = 236 miles per month

59 + (.02*119) + (.12x) = $75.42

59 + 2.38 + .12x = $75.42

subtract the two plain numbers to the other side...

.12x = 14.04

then divide to get x by itself...

x = 117.

she can drive 236 miles a month, and will spend $75.42 a month. :)

236 miles
$59.00 (lease fee)
$2.38 (119 miles at $.02 per mile)
$14.04 (117 miles at $.12 per mile)
Total: $75.42
119 + 117 = 236 mi

$59 + $.02*119 = $61.38

$75.42 - $61.38 = $14.04

$14.04/$.12 = 117

so she can travel 119 + 117 miles = 236

We start with P = $59 + $.02M, M≤119
P = $59 + $2.38 + $.12(M-119), M>119
Set price = $75.42
75.42 = 61.38 + .12(M-119)
75.42 = 61.38 - 14.28 + .12M
28.32 = .12M
236=M
