Everybody has an accent. When I was bar tending on the beach I could hear someone order a drink and tell you where north of the Mason/Dixon line they were from. Not only do New Yorkers have an accent there are dialects from the different areas of NY.

Yes, we New Yorkers do have an accent, and just as mentioned by another answerer there are sub-accents in the basic New York accent. Some are strictly regional (Long Islander as opposed to a Brooklynite) and some are more cultural (a New York Puerto Rican will sound a bit different from a PR in another region (say Miami). I would tend to say it's a bit of a mish-mosh. All in all you can definitely tell a New Yorker wherever we go.

everybody has accents. i am from the south and there are probably 100 different southern accents alone and i'm sure the same is true for new york and every other region of the country.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is so true..I love it. I know I have an accent but we (New Yorkers) think we don't.... I had a family member call me Joe for a long time.. because she said when I said "Yo" (something I used to say ALL the time).. it sounded like Joe..LOL...
