I have built quite a few tanks over the years and unless you a building something over about 180 gallons or so it's cheaper to buy the tank.... at least at prices in my area.

Buying is cheaper about 99% of the time.

Building is only cheaper if you already have the glass, otherwise the glass costs will usually break the bank.

Keep an eye out on craigslist or eBay for cheap tanks. Sometimes certain chain pet stores will have excellent deals on the tank only (stand and canopy are still full price), so if all you need is the tank you can walk away with a great bargain.

It depends on the dimensions you are considering of building. If it is just a standard tank that can be bought, i would rather just buy it. Even cheaper buying it used from classifieds like craigslist.org where i got a 55 gal w/ light and everything for 80 bucks. If you are thinking of building a tank that you customized and noone sells it (like a tank has more ground area than standard tanks, i would just build it. Building with plexiglass, i know for sure it would be more expensive as buying a standard (for a 125gal, my uncle paid roughly $400 just on peices of plexiglass and we had to glue them assemble it). I dont know about glass.

I always go to liveaquaria.com its the dr. fosters and smith website, and they are vey helpful on a lot of different things. I have a 30 gallon saltwater fishtank, and if you have the skills and know how to build a tank than your better off, because it might last longer, and you could probably seal it better.
