The phases of the moon are divided into quarters. One full phase is about 28 days. The lunar calendar is based on the phases of the moon. Each phase starts with the new moon, when it is not visible to the earth. There's a link in the sources.

Constellations are formations of stars that people have decided look like stuff, mostly gods and heros. Some of the most famous constellations are the Big and Little Dipper, Ursa Major and Minor; Orion and his belt; and Cancer the crab. A lot of the constellations have legends associated with them, and there is a constellation for every sign of the western 12 month zodiac. There are many books on astronomy (study of the skies) at the library and bookstore.

Most constellations and some planets are quite visible without any telescopes or binoculars, but it is important to be away from cities and other sources of light pollution to get a good view. Some of the more distant planets, like Saturn and Jupiter, as well as their moons, will be most spectacular when viewed through a telescope. You can buy telescopes from almost any company that makes cameras (Canon, Nikon, etc.) as well as from companies like Tasco.

I hope you have a great time exploring the heavens!

For sky and constellation viewing, see the first source. It will make a sky map for any place on Earth at any time of the day or night.

For Moon phases, see the second source.
