If the "Series of Unfortunate Events" is too childish for me to read. BTW--I'm 24. I love the Harry Potter series, though!!

I'm 26, and I liked both series. I think that Harry Potter has some really solid world-building but that JK Rowling's last couple of books are losing focus, and I think that the Snicket books are lovely and very funny, but that the mystery gets a little disappointing in the end. The real problem is that both series try to do both too much and too little, so the pacing and focus suffer. Give the Snicket books a try, you might like them. At the very least they're good bus or sick-day reading when you don't want anything too heavy, but still want something amusing.

Give them a shot. You're never too old to be a kid. I have the entire Series of Unfortunate Events and all the Harry Potter books so far and I loved them both. I thought the Series of Unfortunate Events was really funny.

I am 36 and I enjoy reading Harry Potter. I read the complete Series of Unfortunate Events and enjoyed the reading, but for different reasons. They are for younger audiences, however, I loved the dark humor and the way the author uses words and their meanings. Give them a try, if you like the first keep reading them.

I tried reading the first book of that series because I love Harry Potter too! I'm 23 and I found it very hard to get into the story because it's written for a young crowd. It's hard to get through a page or two without the author pausing the story to define certain words he's using. If I were younger, it'd be great to know what those words meant. However, I already knew what they meant, and I just felt that the writing style was set for a very young crowd.

I have read both series. I prefer Harry Potter myself, but the series of unfortnate events is a wonderful series as well. Just keep in mind that it was intended for children. (I'm 21 btw)

I'm 26 and read the "Unfortunate Events" books. There are a few things in there that are perfect for the older ages that most kiddos probably don't pick up on. Some nice dry humor and just fun to read books. Especially if you like YA genre.

I found the first couple of books to be too childish for me (and I love Harry like I love air), but later on, they got better. But Harry is the most adult kids book I've ever read. Unfortunate events is really little-kiddie. Watch the movie, then move to book 4. They don't have much substance, but they are funny/cute.

The good thing is you can read one in like an hour.

Read the Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix. Then read everything else by Garth Nix. I love Harry Potter but Nix makes Rawling look like an amateur.

I didn't enjoy the first SoUE book at all, I found the writer to be a little condescending and overdramatic.

But your milage may vary. I always encourage people to just give a book 100 pages, see if you like it. If not, put it down. If so, keep going.
