A year ago I would have said Home Depot, hands down, but in the last year, I have found more of what I needed and at a better price at Lowe's than I have at Home Depot. And I seem to get better service at Lowe's also. I think Home Depot got a little smug about their booming business and now Lowe's is giving them a run for their money.

I own stock in Home Depot, but I think Lowes runs a better show. Home Depot is not nearly what they were just 10 years ago. Confusing to shop and check-out. Hard to find help. Displays that are 15 feet off the ground. Easy decision.

Generally Lowes, because its an easier store to navigate when I'm in a hurry. Home Depot is geared more to the Contractors. They do have things that Lowes Dosen't have though, especially in the area of plumbing and electrical so I end up there first if I need something other then a simple part..
So, I shop both.

I shop at Home Depot because it's closest to me and has decent pricing, but I prefer to shop at Lowe's because the stores are almost always cleaner, and the help more helpful. When I get done shopping at the Depot, I'm often in need of a bath!

The question has been asked often, and with no offense to anyone here, it may be as personal a choice as religion or politics.
Certainly in specific instances either might be cleaner, or better stocked, or have adequate sales help on the floor, but in a general sense they are the same.
Another issue is pretty obvious, at least to me...Where one pops up, the other is soon to follow. It's the nature of capitalism. Not a lot different than a 4 way intersection with 4 different gas stations opposing each other.
My issues with either are more related to knowing exactly what I want, perhaps calling ahead to determine if it's available, and choosing to save dollars in gas and time in travel, depending on which is closer, over an offering of savings in pennies.
Obviously they both serve a purpose; both serve a large customer base; and both offer to their respective communities.

Lowes because where I live, the Home Depot is the "ghetto" home improvement store and is really trashy. My husband is a contractor and only shops at Lowes because the customer service is better.

Lowe's cause I have a Lowe's card :)
They are about the same and their items vary only slightly. For lumber I choose a local store instead. Lowe's and Home Depot don't have the straightest and best quality lumber. It's okay for small jobs around the house but for real construction I want better quality.

Up here in the province of Ontario, our choice includes RONA, as we do not have Lowes up here yet. The prices are essentially the same, so it comes down to who is the nearest, and who gave you the better customer service. The supplier is only as good as their last mistake.
When you are dropping a large chunk of change for your newest pet project, you want friendly, courteous and informed help. It's the employee that goes the extra yard that makes the difference in your shopping experience.

I'm gonna have to be a little less organized. Ans say that I shop at Home Dept. Because I started doing it, way back yonder. (Southern term) Home Depot is from Atlanta. And we all got hooked on it, then. I know where everything is, in the Store that I shop at.

Lowes just delivered the wrong toilets for my house and the merchandise itself was broken, I called and raised holy hell and got new and better toilets at no extra cost.
Had it been Home Depot, I would still be on the phone trying to get a real person to talk to me.
