If you're wanting a bike for pure recreation, get a dirtbike. That's what they're made for. Streetbikes can be fun too if you have twisty back roads in your area. Also, if this is your first bike, dirtbikes are a great way to learn. No cars to worry about, and a fall into a pile of dirt or a dune at 20 mph is better than into a telephone pole at 60.

I don't want to offend any street riders, but after years of riding motocross, a street bike ride is just boring to me. I couldn't live without my dirt bike. When I'm too old to MX I'll buy a street bike though. I think a lot has to do with whether you have good places to ride a dirt bike where you live. Also I would consider if I have friends that ride either. Having people to ride with makes all the difference to me. I agree with you on the dual sport. Why get something that sucks on both the dirt and the road.

I'd get a dirt bike if I would get equal use out of either. It's safer.
There are no soccer moms talking on cell phones, in the dirt.
There are no grandparents with slow reflexes wearing hearing aids, in the dirt.
There's less of a chance of getting T-boned by a teenager who's just gotten their drivers license, in the dirt.
Besides, it's less expensive - no registration fees, state inspection fees, or insurance required.

There is fun street and boring street. There is fun dirt and boring dirt.

If you live near lots of twisties, I would say street.

If you live way out in the country, with lots of knarly trails (or the space and resources to create a nice track), or near the desert and dunes, I would say dirt.

Just don't be a dull boy. ;-) A dirt conversion is another option - take a 250 dirt and make it street legal!

Street. I'd get useful use out of it, not just recreational use.
