I bought a male and female betta. I found a great bowl, it looks very nice, but I think it is too small. It is less than 1 gallon, I think, and I am getting a 5 gallon tank. There is a cave for the female to hide in, and there are 5 other small decorations. The tank has a light in the canopy, and comes with a filter. Is a 5 gallon tank big enough for 2 bettas? (male and female) They were in the small fish bowl for 2 days, but I noticed the male was flaring his gills at her. Thanks for the help.

A male and female betta shouldn't be kept together except at breeding time. The male gets quite territorial and will eventually harass her literally to death. A 5 gallon would however be great foe a male betta and a cory catfish or two... maybe even one or two other very small fish. Many people like a 2.5 gallon kit for a betta, male or female.
Under a gallon CAN be done for a betta, but only if you put in lots of contstant effort to keep the water changed every 2-3 days and be extremely careful with feeding. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have lots of time available and some experience with fish keeping. Feell free to email me if I can help further

5 gallons would be better for the two. The male probably will fight with the female at times, especially after spawning and certainly as the fry mature. There is a chance at some point you will outgrow this tank and need multiple tanks, as that is the solution for many bettas, not a larger tank.
The 5-6 gallon Eclipse tanks should be a good start. Plan on getting a small 25 watt heat in the Fall...

A good rule of thumb for any fish and the appropriate tank size is... per every inch of fish there should be a gallon of water... so 2 One inch fish should have at least 2 gallons of water, 1 five inch fish should have at least 5 gallons of water, 2 five inch fish should have 10 gallons of water... and so on. Always research the breed of fish and see what types of other fish co exist well in the same environment. Two bettas should never be in the same tank. (unless you are trying to breed them but that is tricky b/c then you will need to know about the breeding methods and temperature of the water and proper tanks for the babys, it really can be a headache!)

Well actually you should not keep them in the same tank until it is time for them to reproduce, other wise they will probably end up killing each other, because they are fighting fish. The best way usually to keep Betta's in the same tank, if necessary is to get a plastic tank divider, or a see through mesh divider. You can usually find them at Walmart in the fish section.

You should not keep a male and female in the same tank unless they are mating which takes alot of care and knowledge to do.The best thing to do would be to get a divider for your tank as soon as possible.

The tank is a decent sounding size, yes.
The probem is, i wouldn't put a male and femae betta together unless they are breeding. You should research this further.

Yes, that size sounds fine for those fish. However, I'm not sure that male & female bettas should be kept together. Maybe someone else will address that.
