I keep hearing people say that!.. Isn't it totally clear that a draft is the last thing the Bush administration wants? That would turn the population against them! Now they have an all volunteer force, no dissent, every soldier there at Bush's disposal.. I HOPE there's a draft, it would give us all a reason to take to the streets in record numbers not seen since Vietnam, and THEN we'd see how long he could drag this war on...

yes dems are looking for it. bottom line, this war might have been winnable if we could have sent 300,000 troops in. we couldn't do that, because it was a volunteer army, we couldn't recruit more because then we'd need a draft, and if there was a draft it was all rip to shreds and people would have gone bonkers years ago.

some a$$hole below decided to question my patriotism. I joined the peace corps and served my country for years doing what I could to help others. Before you go about doing that, I would ask you who in this administration has been to war? Who's kids are at war? Nobody, nobody and nobody.

I agree with you, that the last thing the Bushies would want is a draft. The whole country would turn against them. What Bush wants is to drag it on at the expense of the poor who make up most of the military.

I have family in the military. One of them recently joked to me, after his third tour in Iraq, that the only group left for Bush to call up is the Civil War re-enactors. My guess is he'll try to get legislation allowing illegal aliens to serve in return for citizenship. I believe Rome did this in its last days.

there is honestly no evidence that Bush needs the draft nor the Republicans. in accordance for your own article, the attempt would not take position till 2009. The attempt is a good mission, because it really is proactive might want to the draft ever ought to take position. favor FEMA had run some proactive checks. also contained in the item, you'll discover the purely human beings speaking specifically about the draft were Democrats. I even don't have any concerns about the draft coming lower back, even although i'm already contained in the preserve. all the suitable, center and reduce ranks comprehend that you do not pick human beings in there who do no longer pick to be in there. My life is slightly too major to have some disgruntled draftee no longer overlaying my lower back. My purely help for the draft may be the worst case state of affairs - we are overrun in our u . s . a . and we favor each and every guy achievable, yet i do not ever see that going on. Be frightened of the Democrats who help the draft no longer W.

Does a jury "look for a way to execute a person by the electric chair", or if found guilty, is death by the elecrtric chair a sentence (a solution) to a crime?

Does a homeowner "look for a way to mow the yard and rake the leaves", or must a homeowner mow the yard and rake the leaves as part of routine maintenance (a solution to a problem) of home ownership?

Does a music lover "look for a way to buy a new sound system of receiver, five speakers, a CD player, and monster cable for about $4000.00", or does a music lover have to buy a new sound system because the old one got fried by a direct hit of a lightining strike (a solution to a loss of the sound system)?

Does a fisherman "look for a way to stick worms on a hook", or does a fisherman stick worms on a hook so he can catch fish (the solution to landing a fish)?

What idiot would think any president "would look for a way to re-institute a draft"???

Let me repeat--what total retard would think that Bush is "looking for a way to re-institutute a draft"???

If, and I say if, a politician thought that a new draft was in order, it would not be because that politician would be "looking for a way to start the draft", but would consider it as an option because that politician believes it would be in the best interest of national security to have a draft.

Anybody who thinks that Bush or any other politician would start a draft because "they were looking for a way to start the draft" and not because they believe it is the solution to national security manpower needs is either a child lacking knowledge or an adult lacking common sense or an adult with so much animosity toward that politician that they are incapable of making rational comments.

Love Bush or hate Bush, only a retard would think that Bush "would be looking for a way to start the draft just to be starting the draft".

I agree with you but, unfortunately, Bush will never institute a draft because he doesn't make the decisions. The last president with any intelligence who made his own decisions was Jimmy Carter, and look what happened to him...
As for people taking to the streets in protest, there has been numerous such anti-war rallies in the last 4+ years, none of which had any appreciable effect on stopping this war. To attempt to compare the anti-war protests of the Vietnam War with those happening today is pure folly. The recent protests have little effect on the blind and deaf powers-that-be because they don't care what others think of their policies and tragic mistakes. THEY DON'T CARE!!!
We live in a fascist state controlled by an oligarchy with little if any regard for public opinion or open debate. If you study the tactics of Hitler and Mussolini you will find many similarities to the Bush Administration and what's become of the American Constitutional ideal.
Read Naomi Wolf's "Fascist America, in 10 Easy Steps", posted on Alternet.org, April 28, 2007 (War on Iraq). To think some people still assume they live in a democracy...

first, the president cannot institute the military draft. That takes an act of congress.
second, bring it on! I'm one of those who were "in the streets" during Nam, but stop and think here. 'Nam was a 10000 day foulup begun by HST. Here are some facts about 'Nam
September 26, 1945 - The first American death in Vietnam occurs, during the unrest in Saigon, as OSS officer Lt. Col. A. Peter Dewey is killed by Viet Minh guerrillas who mistook him for a French officer. Before his death, Dewey had filed a report on the deepening crisis in Vietnam, stating his opinion that the U.S. "ought to clear out of Southeast Asia."

July 26, 1950 - United States military involvement in Vietnam begins as President Harry Truman authorizes $15 million in military aid to the French.
January 1955 - The first direct shipment of U.S. military aid to Saigon arrives. The U.S. also offers to train the fledgling South Vietnam Army.
July 8, 1959 - Two U.S. military advisors, Maj. Dale Buis and Sgt. Chester Ovnand, are killed by Viet Minh guerrillas at Bien Hoa, South Vietnam. They are the first American deaths in the Second Indochina War which Americans will come to know simply as The Vietnam War.
October 24, 1961 - On the sixth anniversary of the Republic of South Vietnam, President Kennedy sends a letter to President Diem and pledges "the United States is determined to help Vietnam preserve its independence..."
November 24, 1963 - President Johnson declares he will not "lose Vietnam" during a meeting with Ambassador Lodge in Washington.
By year's end, there are 16,300 American military advisors in South Vietnam which received $500 million in U.S. aid during 1963.

As you can plainly see, 'Nam was NOT a justified nor justifiable war. The Vietnamese did not attack us, the USSR did not attack us, the Chinese did not attack us.
The situation today in the Med is different. We WERE attacked and are continually under attack from that same contingent. This war is justified and should jolly well be taken to its logical end.

I don't think he is looking for it right now but I would support him on it if he feels it is needed at a later time. I would support a democratic president on this. I have always believed that every American should be required to give at least 2 years of civil or military service to their country. Those who don't believe that our way of life is worth that , need to find the country that they think is better.

A draft will never happen during Dubya's administration. The people already have turned against him and don't support his bogus conflict in Iraq. What makes you think they would support a draft? If the mere suggestion of this were made by him or any member of his administration, they would be laughed out of D.C. As I have pointed out many times in this forum, despite what he may think, Dubya doesn't wag the dog. The dog wags him. I am of the notion that the dog at this moment might be considering having the tail amputated, seeing as it has caused him so much pain and suffering.

No, I don't even think the people who are proposing it even think that, or want it. It's a political ploy - everyone realizes the draft would be even more unpopular than the war is now, so it's convenient to point to your political adversary and say "he wants the draft!"

A draft would have happened a long time ago if Bush had wanted it. It's always been an option to be considered...and always been decided against.
