Secret Service protection is provided for ALL presidential candidates. This was started after RFK was assasinated in 1968.

Rarely as an Afro-American; am I applaud or embarrassed by our citizens in this great country; this is one of them.

(CNN) -- Illinois senator and Democratic presidential candidate Barrack Obama has been placed under the protection of the U.S. Secret Service, the Secret Service said Thursday.

A statement from Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he authorized the protection detail for Obama.

"As a matter of procedure, we will not release any details of the deliberations or assessments that led to protection being initiated," the statement said. "For security reasons we will not release the timing, scope or details of any protective operations."

The Secret Service told CNN no specific threat had been made against Obama.

There is a thing called the 1% factor which dictates that at least 1% of the population is comprised of crackpots who hate their lives so much that they want to get their 15 minutes of fame by issuing death threats against anyone.

It has nothing to do with any political views held by an individual as some doofus on this blog suggested.

Barak Obama is below secret service secure practices no longer because of the fact of threats made against him yet because of the fact he's a presidential candidate. it fairly is familiar technique. If he loses, and is now no longer a candidate, he loses his secure practices.

Seriously, this is my biggest concern for Obama. I really like the guy and what he says, but am afraid some redneck is going to kill him if he gets voted into office. I would hope we were past that, but unfortunately, we are not.

It does not surprise me. Some prejudiced red neck probably made a death threat. We still have people in the US who hate black people.
