You do not need to remove the engine to replace the flywheel.
You will have to separate the trans from the engine to access the flywheel. I used to remove the trans mount, install two 6" long 3/8"x16 bolts in the lower left and right bell housing bolt holes and slide the trans back without removing it from the car. You can still reach in there with a long wrench and remove the flywheel bolts. I bought an extra long 14/15mm closed end wrench from Snap-On just for doing this. 14mm is only .0113" smaller than 9/16" so the wrench fits snug and lowers the risk of the wrench slipping off the flywheel bolts. You'll have to use a flywheel holder to stop the flywheel from rotating when you loosen the flywheel bolts.

On almost every car,the flywheel is situated between the gearbox and the engine block.If you're good at working in tight spots,you can just separate themfor a bit.If not,you can either remove the transmission or the engine.I'd reccomend the transmission,since it shouldn't have many cables,wires,hoses,bolts and stuff holding it to the car like the engine has.Good luck!

No. You can remove the transmission as well. Either way the engine and transmission have to be separated in order to replace the flywheel.
