distributor cap maybe? it runs power from the battery and alternator to turn the pistons
if it's a car made before 1984 you may want to check the carburetor also (cars made after 1984 usually use a fuel injection system which made carburetors obselete)

If the battery was good and the cables were on tight or the alternator was running the engine wouldn't die when you pulled the jumper cables off. Either one would keep the car running. Best guess is you don't have the alternator hooked up right and you aren't getting the battery cables on tight.

depending on what kind of car it is but most also have battery relays that can go out when they do it feels just like your battery plus if you have any air leaks it won't stay running either

you have a short somewhere in the filange....not sure where, prolly between the air circulatorometer and the upper rotary girder....
in case you havent noticed, i have no clue of what i am talking about. Take it to a mechanic.
