Not sure that the comparison is accurate. Both are operating systems and fit a different market, although the market is starting to blur a bit as the Linux desktop interface improves. Microsoft Windows has an advantage over Linux as far as the volume of applications available for that platform. Linux has traditionally be the "developers" desktop/server environment and is much more flexible than closed/proprietary operating systems like Microsoft Windows. Sites like Google use Linux clusters to run their software, but I'm sure it is a very customized Linux version.

In your particular situation, if you are trying to get a faster computer to run your games or office applications, remember that software is generally compiled for a single operating system. As much as I'd like to see a balance of desktop operating systems, I think Microsoft still is the easier choice to make for the typical user as most applications they want will be targeted toward that platform. Figure that most software vendors are looking to write their software once and sell many copies, so they'll target the dominant platform.

I'm rooting for Linux (and OpenSolaris) to cut into that market as I like the UNIX environment over MS Windows. An application for Linux called WINE (WINdows Emulator) allows for some applications to run on a Linux system. Other applications that allow virtualization (Mac Bootcamp and VMWare for example) will also help.

Linux more stable? Maybe server stuff but I have had a lot of programs crash in Linux too.

Linux use of ease? Not that bad if you are good with command line. Also some programming skills would be very helpful to do more advance stuff.

3D support? Windows has DirectX which is superior to OpenGL which is big in the Linux world. This is a reason why games are not made for Linux.

Software compatibility sucks for Linux as well.

The shell scripting is alot better then Windows DOS batch files. You will find this handy for doing all kinds of tasks in Linux.

Most of the software for Linux is open source which means FREE!

Security is better then Windows. But it's not perfect either. Linux security is only good if you know what your doing. Most of the time you get these noobs who have outdated boxes and all you have to do is download a root kit.

Also Windows own most of the share in market. Thus developers who wish to make money usually go Windows. This is why Linux and Macs are left in the dust in program compatibility for software.
