To me this is an easy choice simply because of the time. A day trip to the Vineyard is just not long enough. By the time you get there you'll be turning around, plus transportation on island is pretty pricey.
If you will be in Boston I would suggest you take the Provincetown II from Boston. It leaves from in town, it's a 3 hour ride down (great to bring a towel and lie out on top deck for ride down, enjoy the band and bar on other decks on ride back IMHO). Then you get 3 hours in Ptown. It's a little short, I always wished they would give another hour or 2 there, but it's enough time to have a nice lunch, people watch, and poke around the stores, or go walk by the water, for a bit.
What I like about this idea is you won't waste any of you time stuck in traffic, but it will all be fun time. If you had longer I would totally agree with the personal who wrote about Plymouth. It's a great town to go to, and if you can restructure your trip worth considering. But if it's only one day, I'd go for this and relax and have fun!

I live outside of Boston and a day trip to the "Vineyard" is never enough..but Martha's Vineyard is an island....once you get there by ferry you can ride bikes, go to different areas - if you bring your car you need to make reservations. Parking your car in
Falmouth, MA is probably best. As for Cape Cod, well, the National Seashore is something that other parts of the country don't have ...sand dunes, sea gulls...wonderful beach at Nauset. If you like to soak up the sun, that is a good place to do it! The other idea I offer to you is to take the boat from Boston that goes to Provincetown - the very tip of the cape. If your staying in Boston and are tired of driving this might be very relaxing. The boat is large and open - it is a party boat at night sometimes - offer beverages on it. But it cruises out of the Boston Harbor - ...whatever you do, have a wonderful time
in Massachusetts! :o)

Getting to the Vineyard in just a day would be tough. You have to factor in the entire drive to the Cape, and then go to a town like Falmouth where you can catch the ferry, wait for the ferry and then get over to the island. Include in that, you would need to schedule you're whole trip around when you need to catch the ferry back, and really there isn't enough time to relax. If you got up really early you could maybe fit it in, but who wants a vacation of rushing? Go to somewhere along the Cape instead. Old Silver Beach in Falmouth is GREAT and they have lots of good places to eat. Other good towns are close by like Hyannis or Yarmouth. Either that or go all the way down the Cape to PTown, which is always a fun trip. This way you have more freedom with your travel and more time!

I love both the Vineyard and the Cape. If you're staying in Boston, you may want to take the high speed ferry from Boston to Provincetown and spend the day there. I believe there are even shuttles to the beaches from P-town center. That way you aren't spending your day in traffic. P-town is a lively place in the summer - and it has some of the best shops and restaurants on the Cape. The beaches nearby are beautiful, especially if you can shuttle from P-town to Truro (next town over)

Have breakfast at the Water Street Cafe in Plymouth, then take a ferry to Provincetown. Lots of sea air and plenty to do in P-town from eating and shopping to lazing on the beach. When you get back to Plymouth in the evening, you can walk the waterfront and see the Mayflower and Plymouth Rock. My recommendations for dinner in Plymouth are the East Bay Grille (drinks, meal, appetizers, salad or sandwich selection) or the Lobster Hut (yummy fried and broiled seafoods)!
I live on the South Shore. The drive to the Cape is a chore in August. Plymouth is halfway between Boston and the Cape Cod Canal.

Take the ferry from Boston to P-town. There are TONS of cute, eclectic shops and good restaurants in P-town. Adrians in Truro is nice too, great view.
The CC Nat'l Seashore is gorgeous in Provincetown and Truro. The outer cape has a lot more beach access than the mid to upper cape. You've got the bay on the other side as well. Snail rd in Ptown off of route 6 is absolutely beautiful if you want to catch a nice sunrise/sunset.
I've never been to MV, but i heard it's nice! and expensive

i survive Cape cod and have in my opinion in no way been to the islands yet from what i hear marthas winery is the greater effectual islnad yet nantucket is smaller and therefor greater easy to get around. i might reccomend staying someplace down interior the decrease cape section and spend sooner or later exploring p-city/ chatham and the national coastline. the 2d day you're able to desire to make your ideas as much as between the islands.
