does anyone know if the heater box and core have to be changed on the sm. blk. to install a 454 big blk

In most cases the same heater assembly is used on both unless there is A/C. Then you may run into some modifications. GM made vehicle back in the 60'S & 70'S for easy assembly.

i just put a 454 into a 68 firebird that had a small block in it and yes, i had to change the heater core and the heater box. because of the position of the heater box on a small block it allows the hoses to be routed behind the pass. side cylinder head, now stuffing in a big block with that same heater box you will run into some interference. change the heater box to be able to route the heater hoses towards the pass. side inner fender. have fun and hope this helps.

alot of it will depend on the model. I have a 70 chevy nova and the heater box is different between the small and big block. Will it fit probably will you be able to work on it later probably not. when installing mine i thought about not changing it until i realized that to change a valve cover gasket I'd have to pull the engine then i realized I'd spend the money to change the heater box.

Shouldn't need to. They are not really related. The only link should be a couple of heater hoses.
