I have a Kenmore gas dryer model #78974890, about 9 years old. When I push the start button the motor runs but as soon as I let go, the motor stops. If I hold it in, the motor runs. I thought it was the switch, so I replaced it. Then I thought it was the motor, so I replaced that. Still have the same problem. Right before it went, you could push the button, and sometimes it would work. Could it be another bad switch? Please help.....

The problem with your dryer is defective control board. It has the start sense which does not work. You can by it for $109.95 here: http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=SrmyP8LkIos&offerid=122738.570745520&type=10&subid=

ok, the button you are pushing is giving an electrical charge to a magnetic coil in a switch, this causes a magnetic pull that brings the contacts together, and the electricity running to the coil keeps it magnetized and connected until you either manually turn off the dryer or it goes off automatically. in short, you are acting as the magnetic coil in the switch by keeping the contacts closed, once you let go, it releases the contacts because the coil in the switch is bad. so call a kenmore dealer provide the model number and they should be able to fix you right up.

Have a qualified gas man check it out. I can name a whole lot of things that it could be, but you probably still would be no better off. Besides 10-12 yrs old is not worn out.& you will find the older models are longer lasting than the new ones My mother is using a gas dryer for about 35 yrs with not a whole lot of trouble. More than likely it is a faulty ignitor or flame sensor. If that is your only problem i would have it repaired.

I would have to say its the timer. You can allways purchase a new timer and return it if this doesn't work. I'm 95% sure that's the problem. Good luck

If it has a pilot light, it could be that the thermocouple is not seeing it. It could be dirty, get some steel wool and clean it off.
