If I understand your question, you have a brass pipe sticking out of the wall, and you want to attach a PVC drain to it. You can buy a PVC slip joint coupling, that will allow you to slip a 1 1/2" slip nut and washer on the brass pipe, then attach one end of the coupling to this nut. Now you have a port to connect the rest of the piping to. Good luck!

Without seeing it, it's hard to know how much space you have to work with, or what the pipe diameters are. I would suggest the easiest fix would be to cut the galvanized pipe off right next to the weld with a pipe cutter. Thread the end (if you have access to a pipe threader) and use a compression fitting to seal the PVC pipe in (again, this depends on the diameter of the pipe).

Go to the hardware store and get an adapter. You just need to tell them what you want. The PVC adapter will tread onto the brass pipe.

The `waste`connector(usually 1;1/2"ins diameter) allows water from sink bowl to the `trap`, p-trap s-trap etc. The trap joins the waste to the waste pipe that runs to drain or gully. 3 items in order, waste, trap, and waste pipe.
