okay so i spilled hot coffee on my foot the other day and i was wearing open toe shoes, today we get a memo that there are no more open toe shoes at work! the other girls who work there are mad at me, and i think this is ridiculous, it would have hurt just as bad in pumps, but they are not saying no more coffee! does anyone think this is as stupid as i do, i feel really bad! i work in a law office but i'd rather not say where.

i am not an attorney (but i will be going to law school in another year) and i didn't want to make a big deal about it happening at work-anyway, it's been a pretty casual office before this, i know in a more formal office it would be different i just don't want to wear close toe pumps all summer!

lol hahhaha, sorry that is pretty funny to me. all because of coffee, it just reminds me of the book, can you keep a secret by sophie kinsella. although she never spilled coffee on her foot, she works in an office also.

anyway what i would do is stand up to them and go barging right in the rulemaker's room and complain. then i would smile to those girlies that glare at you. but if you cherish your job, i suggest leaving the "barging" in part out and just a boring letter but spray it with your favorite perfume!

this reminds me, i should go read that book again, its makes me laugh:D

btw, i love open toes shoes. and to all those people out there. i think it looks much more professional than pumps (actually, i don't, but still). so make sure you get rid of the stupid NO open toe shoes. we, open toe loving shoes, are counting on you:D

Before leaving the career world I was an executive in the hospitality industry and in our office (Manhattan) both the men and women wore suits every day, period. We all spent a fortune on clothes, dry cleaning, etc etc. And even in that rigorous environment, open toed shoes were perfectly OK. So if your office says they're not, thay must be some real nazis!! If you want to look at this technically...if you get hot coffee inside your shoe if you're wearing closed pumps it just stays inside, burning you more...while if you have open toes the hot liquid drains out, relieving the threat to your health. See it just depends on how you look at it.

Wow, offices still hype the dress code? I remember working for a bank in the 80's and they restricted women employees from wearing slacks. Looking back, I see how ridiculous a rule this was. It's too bad that you wound up a victim of circumstance here. The office biddie's should cut you some slack, it was an accident that snowballed.

It would have hurt just as bad in pumps?

Get a life.

Next time you go to a hospital or medical office, look at the shoes the staff wear.

No open toe shoes there, don't want medical waste on toes.

Your job:
If it wasn't for frivolous lawsuits, hence your law office no doubt, then McDonald's would not have been sued for millions cause grandma spilled coffee on herself, and you would still be wearing open toed shoes.

Now it's a safety risk and thanks to your Human Resources dept, not you, the world is a safer, but less comfortable place.

most places keep a dress code for professionalism purposes. It doesn't sound to me like opened toed shoes are a problem for the environment or professionalism. yes that sounds totally ridiculous. I could understand if you were doing physical work then maybe open toed shoes would be a hazard. But coffee is hot period...if you would have spilled it on your leg would they ban pants made of cotton because you can still get burned...that doesn't sound like a logical reason to ban shoes....i wouldn't work for these boo-boos!!!

Well, I work in a law office, too. Most of them are pretty conservative. They were probably looking for an excuse to "upgrade" the dress code.

the company you work for is basically trying to cover its butt. it doesnt want you to sue them so they make a silly rule. just like school dress codes.

besides the coffee though, closed toe looks more professional and your co-workers should just chill b/c it could have been them with 3rd degree burns on their feet.

okay open toe shoes should not even be permitted in a law firm because they are unprofessional...but as far as those ladies getting mad at you is completley stupid!

I think you are more upset cause every one knows that the rule changed because of you. It's hard to have people mad at you, but they'll get over it.
