It is important for your doctor to actually get a culture from the urine, to be sure there really is an infection. AND to be sure you are being treated with the right antibiotics.
There are other conditions that can cause very similar symptoms (urinary frequency, pain, leakage). So talk to your doctor, and make sure he or she has really made an accurate diagnosis.
Ask about "interstitial cystitis" (he will be impressed). This is a condition that can cause chronic bladder infections which never really go away. It takes a special procedure to diagnose this, not just a culture. The treatment is a little different, also.
If it is simply recurrent bladder infections, some doctors will give an antibiotic like Macrodantin which you take every few days for a few months to keep it from coming back. Another thing to ask about!
I would NOT recommend Uristat, an over-the-counter medication. It does nothing to cure an infection, and can actually mask the symptoms so you think it is better when it is not. This could be dangerous, since it could progress to your kidneys while you are thinking you are OK. (also it has been linked with bladder cancer)
Good Luck!

Boy oh boy do I feel ya'. I'm only 15 years 11 months and I have reflex of the urinary tract. Heres what I do.
1) Tons of cranberry stuff. Crasians. Juice (I recommend Ocean spray Cranberry apple and cranberry grape) and even cranberry capsuals.
2) If you still have sex pee right after, no its not romantic, but I'm sure your partner(s) will understand.
3) When you're in the shower be VERY careful not to get soap inside of you and rinse out with the shower head if possible after every shower. Just use cold water and let it rinse you off.
4) when going to the bathroom, sit with your legs open and when youre done wipe front to back. Because back to front can bring germs from you bottom to your urinary tract.
5) Take a uristat everymorning during an infection.
6) WATER WATER WATER. It's your best friend, even if it burns to pee.
Trust me I'm experienced =]

Do you drink cranberry juice daily? I also suffer from bladder infections very often. And i recently just got over one. If you can't stand the taste of cranberry juice you can get it in the form of a pill in the vitamins section. Cranberry juice is proven to help keep the urinary tract healthy because it makes the urine more acidic and bacteria can't survive in it. If you do already use cranberry juice, maybe you should discuss with your doctor the options you have. maybe you have an underlying medical problem.

Bladder infections run in my friends family she found that drinking Cranberry juice (lots of it) clears it right up. Then once it's gone she drinks it once a day or once everyother day to maintain. She even drinks cranrasberry or cranapple which ever you like better. They all work well. She likes Oceanspray brand but sometimes buys the grocery store brand. good luck Bladder infections are no fun.
