I used to always change the oil in my cars myself. All it would cost is a $10 filter, and less than $10 of oil, plus an hour on the weekend. I only recently started letting the local garages do it just because they would only charge about $20 to $30 for complete service. Now that I have moved, Jiffy Lube is one of the only places to go, and they are charging $38 for their oil changes, and that is just for the cheapest one. Why are they so expensive? Is everything they do really worth the extra money you fork over to them to finish your oil change in 15 minutes?

Because they think it's worth it. But the guys at jiffy lube are not mechanics. They sometimes don't do oil changes that well either. They train a bunch of kids who have no clue about cars and then let them loose in the pits. Some of them do get good at it, but some could Miss one of the procedures, put the wrong type of oil in your car, Or forget to put back together something they took apart to check. Like air filter covers, PVC valves etc.

$20 is cheap these days. You can do it yourself, but that requires buying a lift, oil pan, and disposing of the oil. Seems to be a bigger pain than its worth.

Google for the $20 jiffy coupon image. Double check the expiration date hasn't past. Then print it out.

You have to realize what you are getting when you go to Jiffy Lube. They inspect brake fluid, serpentine belts, wiper blades, antifreeze, air filter, and lights. They check and fill chassis, tires, transmission, transfer case, front and rear differential, power steering, washer fluid, and battery water. Plus you can come in up to 3 time between oil changes to top off these fluids and oil for FREE. Tell me where you can get all that for under $40.

First, consider the location, then have you seen the prices of oil on the stock market or in the local news.

Oil, for one is the base to making gasoline.

38.00 is a little high, but then again, you get what you pay for!

They have to pay for all of the things they screw up and all of the lawsuits the are getting themselves into. I would go back to doing it yourself or find a good shop with ASE certified techs to do it.
