Well, in 2 hours you can either reach one of the Saronic Gulf islands (Aegina one hour, Poros, Hydra, Spetses) or some of the Cycladic islands, which are obviously far more picturesque and the waters are crystal clear. You can choose between Andros (the ferry however sails from Rafina, about one hour from downtown but not so much from the airport), Kea or Kythnos if you sail from Lavrio (not so far from the airport). From Piraeus, provided you take one of the high speed vessels (which of course are more expensive than the conventional ferries) you can reach Paros, Tinos, Syros in about 3-3.5 hours.
Ferry schedules you can find on www.gtp.gr

All are connected to Athens port (Piraeus) by ferry. However, the nicest among the closest are: Andros, Syros, Sifnos, Paros. Those are about 2-3 hours by high-speed ferry. Careful, because there are slower ferries too operating the same routes. Also Aegina and Hydra are very close to Athens, but they are very good for a day trip from Athens, not for a long vacation there.

Ferries from Piraeus (port of Athens) to the Islands leave every minute and to many dozens of Islands. If you want to stick to an island not so far away, try looking at the Islands of Hydra or Aegina, or Spetses. Is distance the only thing you are limiting your trip by?

Most of the Aegean islands are accessible by ferry. Just look on the internet. Incidentally you can't sail from Athens and you will have to get down to the port of Piraeus where all the ferries dock.

Any Greek island you would want to go to is accessible by ferry from Athens.
So first, do your research on which is your favorite island, then go to this site to book it:
http://greekferries.forth-crs.gr/english/npgres.exe?PM=BR
Athens has two ports, Piraeus and Rafina. It can get confusing while booking because often they use the port name, as opposed to the island or city name, so keep that in mind. Good luck to you.

Go to the all Greek Ferries site
http://www.ferries.gr/
From there you can obtain operators and time table information. Hellenic Seaways operate from Piraeus to Crete, Chios and Lesvos.
