I know there's some sort of rivalry situation, but can someone explain how the whole thing got started?

Haven't heard about this before, but i think it makes sense.

Ninjas are really the ancestors of today's L.A. gangsters, which we see in some music videos. As a matter of fact, both classes act about the same, stealing and killing in secrecy, using drugs, serving corrupted people, etc.

On the other hand, the first pirates ever seen by men could have been either: a) Angry Minoans b) Native aborigenes from ancient Australia or c) Japanese outsiders who once got frustrated by their sad living conditions. I'd opt for the latter case, because both Minoans and Australians were fundamentally pacific folks. Japanese too, in surface, are pacifists, if we forget about their sadic fishermen, and then the samurai era, the early shintoist wrestling leagues, the hara-kiri stuff, the alliance with Adolf Hitler, the low-cost cars that were made to slow down american traffic and remain stuck in the snow at 6 in the morning, not to mention pollution from leaded fuel and benzene-filled motor oils, not to mention the pioneering of violence in video games, the manga animations, the hentai and so on.

Hence we have: on one side the ancestors of gangsters, namely the ninjas, and on the other people related to many violent, yet sublte activities, and martial arts. Ninjas and pirates might very well owe nothing to each other, yet they certainly love to fight and cause disasters, directly or not. So when they are left alone in total boredom, they might have to fight each other in order to feel well and alive.

It's all scaled to how each group dresses. Ninja look cool, no matter what the occasion. Pirates....., well pirates just dress gay. Oh sure it's all "swash buckle" this and "Argh!" that but there's only one other community that dollies up so much and Ninja don't cotton to it. Can't say as I blame either of them, it's just two different ways of life that won't congeal.
