Yeah, they are treated as sex objects but not very often the victims of violence although it does happen.
Most of the violence is directed toward other men.
The strippers and all women that work for the club are regarded as being of less value than dogs and are treated like personal property.
Most of the married guys are messing around with other women and their wives know about it in most cases and turn a blind eye to the behavior but are expected to unconditionally maintain fidelity to their husband.
It is an overtly macho male fantasy world.
It is still a real hoot to watch though.

I'm still a teenage fan with an experience similar to yours. For the record, my favourite band is My Chemical Romance. Yes, I think that they are five of the most attractive men to walk the Earth, but this is only a recent development. I listened to them for quite a while without ever seeing their faces. When I finally did see them, they weren't mindblowing. Very anti-model and a little weird, even, which is why they've grown on me so much. There was never an instant physical thing. I'm there with the militia though. The MCRmy was originally the My Chemical Romance street team, which a lot of the recent 'devotees' don't even realise. It's grown way past there now and they don't even need a street team to get word out anymore, but the army is still as supportive as ever. As for threats and violence, there's no need for that. Each to their own. Real fans won't even care if someone else hates their band. The great thing about music is that we all have different tastes. It'd be so boring if we all listened to the same bands. I did convert most of my friends to listening to My Chem, but that was completely accidental. If you're not into the band that's perfectly fine, there's no need to display so much hate for them, or threaten those who do. Wow, that was a long answer. [/rant]

The wives are taken care of financially , but usually not emotionally, but they are expected to be loyal.
The capos have mistresses or "goomas" that they screw on a regular basis, and buy things for. Then there's the occasional fling with a random girl from wherever.
Most of the women don't work and are expected to be home cooking large italian meals, shopping, and socializing.
Hope this helps, I've been a fan since the very beginning!!

Im just getting back into it with the final season. Yes they are treated like sex object, from the strippers at that strip club that tony soprano owns. Carmella is treated somewhat like an equal like tony's sister. Women aren't treated as equals there are no women who are involed with the business like tony and his counterparts.

Women on the Soprano's are treated as second class citizens as that is the culture gangsters cultivate.

you are talking about the mob. the women are treated like gold. look at tony's wife, do you think she is worried about getting raped at the grocery store? do yu think she has to work a day for the rest of her life? if a was a mobsters wife i would let them do whatever they want and weep the benefits

they are only treated this was because they are greedy gold diggers who want to be taken care of finacially. No one made them marry these guys.
